Life Jackets are Mandatory at MS Lakes

The following life jacket rules are being enforced at all four of the Vicksburg District - North Mississippi lakes - Arkabutla, Sardis, Enid and Grenada:

  • All persons must wear a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket at all times while swimming outside of designated swimming areas
  • All persons must wear a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket at all times while skiing or being pulled by a vessel, regardless of vessel length
  • All persons must wear a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket on powered vessels 16 to 26 feet in length whenever under power by the main propulsion unit
  • All persons must wear a US Coast Guard-approved lief jacket at all times on powered vessels less than 16 feet in length or on non-powered vessels regardless of length

  • Make a Difference Day Being Planned for Sardis Lake

    VICKSBURG, MISS…Sardis Lake personnel of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are partnering with Volunteer Oxford to host a cleanup event at Sardis Lake during Make a Difference Day scheduled for Oct. 25, 2014, 9 a.m. until noon. Each October, millions of people from across the nation volunteer during Make a Difference Day.
  • Lower Mississippi River Museum to be staffed by volunteers

    VICKSBURG, MISS…The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District announces that the Lower Mississippi River Museum (LMRM) will now be staffed by volunteers. The LMRM and Motor Vessel Mississippi IV will be open Wednesdays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. beginning Oct. 15, 2014.
  • Vicksburg District Awards Dredging Contract

    Vicksburg, Miss… The US Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District is pleased to announce the award of a contract to dredge on the Mississippi River for $4,390,701 to Weeks Marine, Inc., of Covington, Louisiana. The work consists of furnishing, delivering and operating one cutterhead, hydraulic pipeline dredge, of which Weeks Marine owns seven.
  • Corps Extends Invitation for Volunteers to Participate at Water Sweep 2014

    Vicksburg, Miss… The Vicksburg District of the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers invites the public to participate in Water Sweep 2014 on Saturday, September 20. It is not too late to volunteer to participate! Volunteers can still register to help remove debris from within and along the shores of the Ouachita River and have a fun-filled day. This annual award winning event was originated in 2006 to have volunteers clean along the shoreline and remove unwanted obstacles from the banks of the river and the water.
  • Grenada Lake Organizing Special Draw Hunt for Veterans

    VICKSBURG, Miss…The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Grenada Lake Field Office is organizing a special draw hunt for honorably discharged veterans who are Mississippi residents. Registration for the hunt began September 15, 2014, 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. at the Grenada Lake Visitor Center, Monday through Saturday, and continues through October 13, 2014. The drawing is scheduled for October 14, 2014.
  • Corps Closes Riverton Beach for Winter Months

    Vicksburg, Miss…… The Louisiana Field Office (LFO) of the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District has officially closed Riverton Beach for the winter months, which marks the end of the summer recreational period. The beach is a part of the Corps’ 13-acre recreational area that is located north of Riverton, Louisiana, on the Ouachita River.
  • Corps Waives Day Use Fees at Recreational Areas in Honor of Public Lands Day

    VICKSBURG, Miss…The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) announced today that it will waive day use fees at its more than 2,200 USACE-operated recreational areas nationwide in recognition of National Public Lands Day (NPLD) on September 27, 2014. On this day, fees normally charged at boat launch ramps and swimming beaches will be waived.
  • Mississippi Valley Division Commander received 2nd Star

    VICKSBURG, Miss., September 15, 2014 – U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Commanding General and 53rd Chief of Engineers Lt. Gen. Thomas Bostick promoted Mississippi Valley Division Commander Brigadier General Mike Wehr to the rank of major general, September 12, in a ceremony at his alma mater Santa Clara University (California), which hosted the event.
  • New Rules for Sardis Lake Archery Area

    Sardis, Miss… The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sardis Lake Field Office announces new rules for archery hunting in the Sardis Lake archery areas. Beginning with the 2014-2015 deer hunting season, all hunters must have a permit prior to engaging in any hunting activity within the archery area.
  • Vicksburg District Begins Steel Bayou Drainage Structure Outlet Channel Repair Project

    Vicksburg, Miss……The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District is scheduled to begin work on the Steel Bayou Drainage Structure Outlet Channel Repair Project near the Mississippi Highway 465 bridge beginning after September 1, 2014. The work is necessary to repair a scour hole that has developed downstream of the bridge. Traffic will be halted while work is being performed directly underneath the bridge, or while barges and boats are passing underneath the bridge. The public should be prepared to encounter traffic delays between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., which are expected to be no longer than 15 minutes in duration. The Mississippi Department of Transportation will place signage along Highway 465 to alert traffic to the situation.
