Life Jackets are Mandatory at MS Lakes

The following life jacket rules are being enforced at all four of the Vicksburg District - North Mississippi lakes - Arkabutla, Sardis, Enid and Grenada:

  • All persons must wear a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket at all times while swimming outside of designated swimming areas
  • All persons must wear a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket at all times while skiing or being pulled by a vessel, regardless of vessel length
  • All persons must wear a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket on powered vessels 16 to 26 feet in length whenever under power by the main propulsion unit
  • All persons must wear a US Coast Guard-approved lief jacket at all times on powered vessels less than 16 feet in length or on non-powered vessels regardless of length

  • U.S. Army Dive Team Completes Repairs at Corps’ Narrows Dam

    Vicksburg, Miss… The 569th Engineer Detachment (Dive), 30th Engineer Battalion, 20th Engineer Brigade of Ft. Eustis, Virginia, completed repairs earlier this week at Narrows Dam at Lake Greeson in Murfreesboro, Arkansas.
  • Sixth Graders Learn about Environment at Corps Site

    Vicksburg, Miss… A group of about 250 sixth graders from Lakeside Middle School, Hot Springs, Arkansas, is being afforded the opportunity to enjoy a day of fun and learning at one of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ recreational sites. The students will take a field trip on April 11 to the Avery Recreation Area, with events beginning at 9:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.
  • Chief Engineer of Corps’ Motor Vessel Retires

    Vicksburg, Miss……Alton J. Walters, Chief Engineer on the Corps Vicksburg District’s Motor Vessel Benyaurd, has retired with over 39 years of service.
  • All Terrain Vehicle Usage At Corps Lakes

    Vicksburg, MS... The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District has instituted an educational campaign to remind users of the safety and environmental concerns associated with ATV usage. This campaign is an educational program dedicated to increasing public awareness of how to enjoy the great outdoors while minimizing the impacts of ATV use. Before operating an ATV, it is recommended that operators attend an approved ATV training course. Riders should always wear the appropriate safety gear to include a helmet and protective eyewear.
  • Arkabutla Lake 12th Annual Fish Habitat Day Successful

    Vicksburg, Miss…… Arkabutla Lake recently hosted the 2014 fish habitat day. 25 volunteers gathered at the Arkabutla Lake Field Office to assist with the placement of fish structures in the lake bed. These Volunteers donated more than 170 hours of their time and were served breakfast and lunch, donated by Superlo Foods in Southaven and Kroger in Hernando. Gifts and gift cards were donated by Sportsman’s Warehouse in Southaven and Walmart in Hernando.
  • Mississippi River Commission schedules high-water inspection trip

    VICKSBURG, Miss., March 2014 -- The Mississippi River Commission will conduct its annual high-water inspection trip on the Mississippi River April 7-11, 2014.
  • William Carpenter Retires After 45 Years of Service

    Vicksburg, Miss…… William Carpenter, civil engineering technician at the Greenwood Area Field Office recently retired from the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District, after 45 years of service.
  • Jackie Smith Retires After 25 Years of Service

    Vicksburg, Miss…… Jackie Smith, park contract representative at the Grenada Lake Field Office recently retired from the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District, after 25 years and 11 months of service.
  • President's 2015 Civil Works Budget for Mississippi Valley Division focuses on improving nation’s economic growth

    VICKSBURG, Miss., March 5, 2014 - The President’s Budget for fiscal year 2015 has been released and included $825 million in funding for the civil works program of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mississippi Valley Division.
  • Corps to Host “Women in the Outdoors” at Bayou Bodcau

    Vicksburg, Miss ….The Louisiana Field Office (LFO) of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District will host the National Wildlife Turkey Federation’s Women in the Outdoors event this Saturday, 8 March, at Bayou Bodcau Wildlife Management Dam and Reservoir. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. on the grounds of the Durden House located at 1700 Bodcau Road, Haughton, Louisiana.
