Life Jackets are Mandatory at MS Lakes

The following life jacket rules are being enforced at all four of the Vicksburg District - North Mississippi lakes - Arkabutla, Sardis, Enid and Grenada:

  • All persons must wear a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket at all times while swimming outside of designated swimming areas
  • All persons must wear a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket at all times while skiing or being pulled by a vessel, regardless of vessel length
  • All persons must wear a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket on powered vessels 16 to 26 feet in length whenever under power by the main propulsion unit
  • All persons must wear a US Coast Guard-approved lief jacket at all times on powered vessels less than 16 feet in length or on non-powered vessels regardless of length

  • Vicksburg District Honors Fee Wavier on Veterans Day

    Vicksburg, Miss… The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) will waive day use fees for veterans, active and reserve component service members and their families at the more than 2,400 USACE-operated recreational areas nationwide on Veterans Day, 11 November 2013. This includes all recreational areas in the Vicksburg District.
  • U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Resumes Work

    Vicksburg, Miss …With the ending of the partial government shutdown, all U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ team members are back at work. All Vicksburg District offices resume their normal work schedule. Today, Vicksburg District commander, Col. John Cross, said, “It’s great to have our team back working to take care of the nation’s water resources.”
  • Vicksburg District Regulatory Offices Closure Due To Federal Government Shutdown

    Vicksburg, Miss…The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) will close the Vicksburg District Regulatory offices due to the absence of available federal funding. Regulatory offices will be unable to evaluate individual permit applications, pre-construction notifications (PCNs) for nationwide permit (NWP) or regional general permit authorizations, or requests for jurisdictional determinations until after current year funding is received and the offices reopen.
  • Government Shutdown Impacts to Vicksburg District

    Vicksburg, Miss…Due to the lack of 2014 funding legislation and the government shutdown, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District (District) has reduced services. Personnel in public safety and protection of infrastructure related positions will remain on duty.
  • U.S. Army Corps of Engineers preparing for possible October 1 closures of campgrounds and day-use parks

    Vicksburg, Miss…The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is preparing for the closure of USACE-operated campgrounds and day-use parks nationwide beginning Tuesday, 1 October 2013, if the potential shutdown of the federal government goes into effect for lack of fiscal 2014 funding legislation.
  • DeGray Lake Hosts Handicap Fishing Derby

    Vicksburg, Miss…Residents of area nursing homes and the local Human Development Center at Arkadelphia, will have the unique opportunity to enjoy an outdoor fishing opportunity. Media outlets are invited to attend. Personnel at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers DeGray Lake Field Office will host a fishing derby for physically challenged persons on 25 September 2013, beginning at 9:00 a.m. at the Lake View Recreation Area at DeGray Lake. The participants will fish in groups from morning until around noon. In the past, as many as 100 persons participated in this event.
  • Corps Closes Riverton Beach for Winter Months

    Vicksburg, Miss……The Louisiana Field Office (LFO) of the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) has officially closed Riverton Beach for the winter months which marks the end of the summer recreational period.
  • Corps Extends Invitation to Participate in Activities at Water Sweep 2013

    Vicksburg, Miss… The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers invites the public to participate in Water Sweep 2013 on Saturday, 21 September. This eighth annual award winning event was originated in 2006 to have volunteers clean along the shoreline and remove unwanted obstacles from the banks of the river and water. The goal is to provide safe and enjoyable recreational areas along the river and make a difference in the scenic Ouachita River’s waterways and shorelines.
  • Army Corps of Engineers Reviews Cooperative Joint Management Arrangements with Non-Profit Partners

    Vicksburg, Miss… The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced today that it lacks authority to permit the non-profit, cooperating association Friends of Lake Ouachita to reinvest user fees collected from patrons of the Crystal Springs and Tompkins Bend campgrounds at Lake Ouachita. A recently conducted legal review of USACE’s cooperative joint management program for recreational facilities revealed that these user fees must be deposited into the Land and Water Conservation Fund in the U.S. Treasury. These fees can no longer be retained by the non-profit, cooperating association and used for operational and maintenance purposes.
  • DeGray Lake Hosts National Public Lands Day and Great Arkansas Cleanup

    Vicksburg, Miss… DeGray Lake will host The Great Arkansas Cleanup in recognition of National Public Lands Day 21 September 2013. Registration will be at the Spillway Area at DeGray Lake beginning at 8:00 a.m. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Vicksburg District and the Keeping DeGray Lake Beautiful committee wants all citizens to understand the importance of keeping America beautiful and instilling life-long habits of not littering and recycling.
