Life Jackets are Mandatory at MS Lakes

The following life jacket rules are being enforced at all four of the Vicksburg District - North Mississippi lakes - Arkabutla, Sardis, Enid and Grenada:

  • All persons must wear a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket at all times while swimming outside of designated swimming areas
  • All persons must wear a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket at all times while skiing or being pulled by a vessel, regardless of vessel length
  • All persons must wear a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket on powered vessels 16 to 26 feet in length whenever under power by the main propulsion unit
  • All persons must wear a US Coast Guard-approved lief jacket at all times on powered vessels less than 16 feet in length or on non-powered vessels regardless of length

  • Corps Extends Invitation to Participate in Activities at Water Sweep 2013

    Vicksburg, Miss… The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers invites the public to participate in Water Sweep 2013 on Saturday, 21 September. This eighth annual award winning event was originated in 2006 to have volunteers clean along the shoreline and remove unwanted obstacles from the banks of the river and water. The goal is to provide safe and enjoyable recreational areas along the river and make a difference in the scenic Ouachita River’s waterways and shorelines.
  • Army Corps of Engineers Reviews Cooperative Joint Management Arrangements with Non-Profit Partners

    Vicksburg, Miss… The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced today that it lacks authority to permit the non-profit, cooperating association Friends of Lake Ouachita to reinvest user fees collected from patrons of the Crystal Springs and Tompkins Bend campgrounds at Lake Ouachita. A recently conducted legal review of USACE’s cooperative joint management program for recreational facilities revealed that these user fees must be deposited into the Land and Water Conservation Fund in the U.S. Treasury. These fees can no longer be retained by the non-profit, cooperating association and used for operational and maintenance purposes.
  • DeGray Lake Hosts National Public Lands Day and Great Arkansas Cleanup

    Vicksburg, Miss… DeGray Lake will host The Great Arkansas Cleanup in recognition of National Public Lands Day 21 September 2013. Registration will be at the Spillway Area at DeGray Lake beginning at 8:00 a.m. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Vicksburg District and the Keeping DeGray Lake Beautiful committee wants all citizens to understand the importance of keeping America beautiful and instilling life-long habits of not littering and recycling.
  • Vicksburg District Reaffirms Partnerships with Adopted Schools

    Vicksburg, Miss…The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Vicksburg District personnel recently participated with adoption ceremonies at their two adopted schools, Vicksburg High and Sherman Avenue Elementary through the Adopt A School Program. This is the 15th year for the adoption partnership between the Vicksburg District and Vicksburg High School, while the partnership between Sherman Avenue Elementary and the Vicksburg District is in its fourth year. The District’s committee consists of an all volunteer team composed of Vicksburg District employees.

  • Vicksburg District Hydraulics Branch Selects New Mexico Native for Internship

    Vicksburg, Miss….The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) Vicksburg District hydraulics branch recently selected Devon Gijsbers as a Department of the Army intern for the position of hydraulic engineer. Gijsbers’ responsibilities include inundation mapping, execution of dam breach analyses on Corps dams by developing hydraulic models and developing preliminary consequence models to estimate damages in the event of a dam failure. She is also responsible for developing detailed hydraulic watershed models for the Corps’ Modeling, Mapping, and Consequences Production Center.
  • Vicksburg District Team Member Receives Medals/Awards at Annual Founder’s Day

    Vicksburg, Miss… Dennis Ward, a contract representative at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sardis Lake Field Office, recently received a Secretary of Defense Global War on Terrorism Medal, a Commander’s Award for Civilian Service, and the NATO-5 Medal at the Vicksburg District’s ninth annual Founder’s Day ceremony.
  • Vicksburg District Team Member Receives Achievement Medal for Civilian Service

    Vicksburg, Miss…Whitney R. Ladzick, a hydraulic modeler with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) Vicksburg District’s Modeling, Mapping, and Consequences Production Center (MMC), recently received a Department of the Army Achievement Medal for Civilian Service at the District’s ninth annual Founder’s Day ceremony.
  • Vicksburg District Team Member Receives Commander’s Award for Civilian Service

    Vicksburg, Miss…Robert Cory Winders (Cory), hydraulic engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District’s Modeling, Mapping, Consequences, and Production Center (MMC), recently received a Commander’s Award for Civilian Service at the District’s ninth annual Founder’s Day ceremony.
  • Grenada Lake Annual Drawdown Accelerated This Year

    Vicksburg, Miss – The Vicksburg District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) will accelerate the annual drawdown of Grenada Lake by one month in order to perform dam maintenance. The Corps has increased the amount of water released through the dam within seasonal release requirements in an effort to reach the flood control pool level of 193 feet by 1 November.
