Life Jackets are Mandatory at MS Lakes

The following life jacket rules are being enforced at all four of the Vicksburg District - North Mississippi lakes - Arkabutla, Sardis, Enid and Grenada:

  • All persons must wear a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket at all times while swimming outside of designated swimming areas
  • All persons must wear a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket at all times while skiing or being pulled by a vessel, regardless of vessel length
  • All persons must wear a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket on powered vessels 16 to 26 feet in length whenever under power by the main propulsion unit
  • All persons must wear a US Coast Guard-approved lief jacket at all times on powered vessels less than 16 feet in length or on non-powered vessels regardless of length

  • Corps Schedules Signing of Partnership Project Agreements

    Vicksburg, Miss…The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District will enter a Partnership Project Agreement with mayors of several Mississippi communities. This signing, to be held at District Headquarters Building on June 16, 2016, is a part of the Mississippi Environmental Infrastructure Program (Section 592) as authorized by the Water Resources Development Act of 1999.

  • Army Corps of Engineers seeks public comments on proposal to renew and revise nationwide permits

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) announced today it is seeking comments on its proposal to renew and revise 50 nationwide permits for work in wetlands and other waters that are regulated by Section 404 of the Clean Water Act and/or Section 10 of the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1899. In addition, USACE is proposing to issue two new nationwide permits that pertain to authorizing the removal of low-head dams and the construction and maintenance of living shorelines.

  • Corps’ Greenwood Area Office Area Engineer Retires

    Vicksburg, Miss…Samuel J. Horton, Area Engineer of the Greenwood Area Office, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District, retired recently with over 39 years of service. Sam began his career with the Corps in 1977 as a civil engineer in the Vicksburg District’s Construction Division. He later worked as a project engineer in the Greenwood Area Office.

    Vicksburg, Miss… Before you head out for a day on or near the water, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) encourages you to make sure you have life jackets for everyone and that they please wear them.

  • Vicksburg District Announces Promotion of Chief of Emergency Management

    Vicksburg, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Vicksburg District, is proud to announce the promotion of Cpt. David M. Kenna to the military rank of Major. Maj. Kenna was commissioned in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in December 2005, and joined the District in April 2014. He serves as chief of the emergency management branch of Operations Division. His duties include developing plans and directing execution of such plans for natural and national emergency situations within the District’s tri-state area of Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. He also serves as advisor to the Commander on policy applicability, project eligibility, and operational procedures concerning emergency activities.

  • Scenic Route 304 (Pratt Road) Reopens in DeSoto County

    VICKSBURG, MISS… Pratt Road (State Scenic Route 304) in DeSoto County, reopened April 25, 2016. Pratt Road is near Arkabutla Lake, below the overflow spillway. This re-opening allows for all public access from DeSoto County past the dam to points north and west. The road has been closed for the past 26 days due to water flowing over the road from the Arkabutla emergency spillway.

  • Scenic Route 304 (Pratt Road) to Close In Tate County

    VICKSBURG, MISS… Due to anticipated heavy rain, Pratt Road will close at noon on March 30, 2016. Pratt road (State Scenic Route 304) is in Tate County near Arkabutla Lake and is below the overflow spillway. This closure will cease all public access from Tate County past the dam to points north and west. The expected duration of closure is unknown at this time.

  • Mississippi River Commission schedules high-water inspection trip

    VICKSBURG, Miss., -- The Mississippi River Commission will conduct its annual high-water inspection trip on the Mississippi River April 11-15, 2016.

  • Flooding in Central Louisiana Causes Corps 24 Hour Surveillance

    Vicksburg, Miss…Due to the higher than normal amount of rainfall in the Shreveport/Bossier City area and most of central Louisiana, the Corps’ Vicksburg District have made preparations for Phase II Flood Fighting. Preparations have been made to increase the level of response (24 hour surveillance) for monitoring the flood, looking for overtopping, seepages, as well as slides.

  • High Water Causing Closing of Corps Visitor Centers

    Vicksburg, Miss…Due to high water, the J. Bennett Johnston Waterway Regional Visitor Center and the Grand Encore Visitor Center will be closed until next week. Both visitor centers are expected to reopen for normal business on Wednesday, March 16, 2016.
