Life Jackets are Mandatory at MS Lakes

The following life jacket rules are being enforced at all four of the Vicksburg District - North Mississippi lakes - Arkabutla, Sardis, Enid and Grenada:

  • All persons must wear a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket at all times while swimming outside of designated swimming areas
  • All persons must wear a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket at all times while skiing or being pulled by a vessel, regardless of vessel length
  • All persons must wear a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket on powered vessels 16 to 26 feet in length whenever under power by the main propulsion unit
  • All persons must wear a US Coast Guard-approved lief jacket at all times on powered vessels less than 16 feet in length or on non-powered vessels regardless of length

  • Corps Waives Day Use Fees at Recreational Areas in Honor of Public Lands Day

    VICKSBURG, Miss…The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) announced today that it will waive day use fees at its more than 2,200 USACE-operated recreational areas nationwide in recognition of National Public Lands Day (NPLD) on September 26, 2015. On this day, fees normally charged at boat launch ramps and swimming beaches at its recreational areas nationwide will be waived.
  • Corps Closes Riverton Beach for Winter Months

    Vicksburg, Miss…… The Louisiana Field Office (LFO) of the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District has officially closed Riverton Beach for the winter months, which marks the end of the summer recreational period. The beach is a part of the Corps’ 13-acre recreational area that is located north of Riverton, Louisiana, on the Ouachita River.
  • Rules for Safe Operation of Off-Road Vehicles at Mississippi Corps Lakes

    Vicksburg, Miss…The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ is enforcing safety rules for all operators of Off-Road Vehicles (ORVs) at its Mississippi lakes at Arkabutla, Enid, Grenada, and Sardis. These rules apply to any motorized vehicle designed primarily for, or capable of, cross-country travel on or over land, water, sand, snow, ice, marsh, swampland, or any other natural terrain.
  • Corps Supports “Every Kid in a Park” Recreational Initiative

    Vicksburg, Miss… President Obama, with the support of the Federal Interagency Council on Outdoor Recreation to include the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, announced today the start of a new initiative to give every child in the United States the chance to explore and learn about America’s great outdoors. The Every Kid in a Park initiative will provide all fourth grade students and their families with free admission for a full year to more than 2,000 federally-managed sites nationwide.
  • Volunteers Needed for Water Sweep 2015

    Vicksburg, Miss… The Vicksburg District of the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and Ouachita Green are seeking volunteers for the annual Water Sweep scheduled for September 19, 2015, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Volunteers are needed for the cleanup of the Ouachita River and other bodies of water in surrounding areas.
  • District Hosts Founder’s Day

    VICKSBURG, MISS…The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District (District) recognized team members with 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 years of service and some Vietnam veterans at its recent Founder’s Day ceremony held at headquarters building. The ceremony was in commemoration of the District’s 142 years of service to the nation. Retirees, including those who are Vietnam veterans, were also recognized at the ceremony. A breakfast for retirees was held in the executive conference room prior to the ceremony.
  • Corps’ Vicksburg District Hosts a Blessing of the Fleet

    Vicksburg, Miss…The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District’s Mat Sinking Unit (MSU) will leave the harbor for its annual revetment season on September 9, 2015 at 10:00 A.M. The District will host a Blessing of the Fleet ceremony on September 9, 2015 at approximately 10:15 a.m. at the Vicksburg City Water Front as the MSU departs.
  • Riverton Recreation Swim Area Re-opens

    VICKSBURG, MS… The Riverton Recreation swim area repair is now complete and open to the public. The swim area was closed due to a broken depth marker. The depth marker had broken/jagged metal that would be dangerous if the area remained opened to the public. The boat ramp, playground area, pavilions, and comfort station remain open to the public.
  • Steele Bayou Flood Control Structure to open this week

    VICKSBURG, Miss… The Steele Bayou Flood Control Structure will be opened Saturday, August 8, 2015. The Steele Bayou structure is located north of Vicksburg and was built in 1969 to provide backwater flood protection from the Yazoo and Mississippi rivers.
  • District Announces Chief of Construction and A&E Branch of Contracting Division

    VICKSBURG, MISS…The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District recently announced the selection of Ellis Screws as chief of its Construction and A&E Branch of the Contracting Division.
