Arkabutla Lake Hosting its 27th Annual Physically Challenged Deer Hunt

The Vicksburg District encompasses a 68,000-square-mile area across portions of Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana that holds seven major river basins and incorporates approximately 460 miles of mainline levees. The district is engaged in hundreds of projects and supports disaster response in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Tennessee.

VICKSBURG, Miss…The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Arkabutla Lake is hosting its 27th annual Physically Challenged Deer Hunt December 7-8, 2017, and December 9-10, 2017. These two-day hunts are the largest hunts of this type in the U.S. which applies to hunters who are quadriplegic, paraplegic, or ambulatory with the use of leg braces or crutches.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers supports the American with Disabilities Act. Our huge recreational program affords opportunities for those individuals who might not otherwise experience such sporting events in the great outdoors. Vicksburg District’s recreational facilities host approximately 10 hunts per year for more than 100 hunters.

Although the primary mission of Arkabutla Lake is flood damage risk reduction, approximately 855,000 individuals visit Arkabutla Lake annually to enjoy the camping, playgrounds, swimming areas, several types of trails, fishing, boat ramps and marinas.  The lake traffic brings $14,000,000 annually to the local economy and supports almost 250 jobs. Arkabutla Lake is one of the four lakes in Mississippi maintained and operated by the U. S.
