    VICKSBURG, Miss. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Vicksburg District, has announced a 15-day extension of the public comment period for the draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) related to the Pearl River Basin, Mississippi Federal Flood Risk Management Project. Originally set to conclude on July 22, 2024, the new deadline for submitting comments is now August 6, 2024.

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District entered into a feasibility cost sharing agreement with Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LADOTD) and the Red River Waterway Commission (RRWC) on June 11, 2024, to study the deepening of the J. Bennett Johnston (JBJ) Waterway to accommodate vessels with a 12-foot draft.

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – Col. Christopher D. Klein transferred command of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District to Col. Jeremiah A. Gipson in a formal change of command ceremony today at district headquarters in Vicksburg, Mississippi. USACE Mississippi Valley Division (MVD) Commander and Mississippi River Commission (MRC) President Brig. Gen. Kimberly Peeples was the reviewing officer of the ceremony. Gipson’s most recent assignment was as the Deputy Commander of the Mississippi Valley Division (MVD) and as the Secretary of the Mississippi River Commission (MRC).

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District recognized dedicated personnel at the annual Corps of Engineers Day Awards Ceremony at the District headquarters today.
  • USACE waives recreation area day use fees June 16 and 19

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will waive day use fees at more than 2,850 USACE-operated recreation areas nationwide in observance of the USACE birthday, June 16, and Juneteenth National Independence Day, June 19. The waiver covers fees for boat launch ramps and swimming beaches. The waiver does not apply to camping and camping-related services, or fees for specialized facilities, such as group picnic shelters, or events. Other agencies or vendors that manage recreation areas on USACE lands are encouraged, but not required, to offer the waiver in the areas that they manage.

  • USACE Vicksburg District (MVK) Utilizes “Big Juicy” to Improve Navigation in Lake Providence, Louisiana

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – Last week, a team from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District’s River Operations Branch completed the removal of approximately 3,500 cubic yards of large rocks and other material from Lake Providence in northeast Louisiana.
  • Heavy Rainfall in Coldwater River Basin Expected to Raise Arkabutla Lake Levels Above 215’

    Vicksburg, Miss – Lake levels at Arkabutla Dam are expected to rise well above 215’ and remain high for close to three weeks as spring rains continue. A potential breach emergency WATCH status at Arkabutla Dam remains in effect and 24-hour monitoring of the dam will begin once levels hit the 215’ mark. This potential breach is associated with observed signs of distress discovered in May 2023. The physical condition of the dam is unchanged, and a dam breach is NOT imminent.
