Life Jackets are Mandatory at MS Lakes

The following life jacket rules are being enforced at all four of the Vicksburg District - North Mississippi lakes - Arkabutla, Sardis, Enid and Grenada:

  • All persons must wear a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket at all times while swimming outside of designated swimming areas
  • All persons must wear a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket at all times while skiing or being pulled by a vessel, regardless of vessel length
  • All persons must wear a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket on powered vessels 16 to 26 feet in length whenever under power by the main propulsion unit
  • All persons must wear a US Coast Guard-approved lief jacket at all times on powered vessels less than 16 feet in length or on non-powered vessels regardless of length

  • USACE Vicksburg District Lake Ouachita low water conditions advisory

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – Due to warm temperatures over the last several months and low rainfall totals, Lake Ouachita water levels are low. Visitors are advised to exercise caution during all water based recreational activities. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) reminds visitors of the importance of practicing safe, sensible, and thoughtful activities in and around the water. On Sept. 23, 2021, the lake level is 568.69 feet above mean sea level and falling. Boaters should use extra caution while navigating near shorelines, islands, points, and any unfamiliar areas. Standing timber, tree stumps, and gravel bars may emerge where they were previously undetected due to higher water levels.
  • USACE Vicksburg District engages emergency operations, mapping centers in preparation for Hurricane Ida

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District activated its Emergency Operations Center (EOC) at Level II Emergency Watch for Hurricane Ida, Aug. 27, 2021, and conducted its first crisis management team meeting today to coordinate with all District elements and ensure proper hurricane preparation.
  • USACE Vicksburg District signs water system rehabilitation agreement with City of Olive Branch

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District entered into a Project Partnership Agreement (PPA) with the City of Olive Branch, Mississippi, Aug. 24, 2021, as part of the Mississippi Environmental Infrastructure Program (Section 592) yesterday.
  • USACE Vicksburg District hosts Acting ASACW Jaime Pinkham for Yazoo Backwater Update

    VICKSBURG, Miss. - Mr. Jaime A. Pinkham, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works who also serves as the Acting Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works, along with Mr. David Leach, P.E., Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army (Project Planning and Review), visited the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District, Aug. 25, 2021, to learn more about the Yazoo Backwater (YBW) Project.
  • USACE Vicksburg District announces Grenada Lake hunting areas for the 2021-2022 season

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District announces that two areas will open for archery hunting at Grenada Lake for the 2021-2022 hunting season. Archers will have two designated archery areas to choose from and will also have the option to use crossbows, compound bows, as well as traditional archery equipment. Registration begins September 7 at the Grenada Lake Visitor Center and all hunters must register prior to hunting.
  • USACE Vicksburg District announces youth deer hunt at Columbia Lock and Dam

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District announces the date for its fall youth deer hunt at Columbia Lock and Dam in Columbia, Louisiana.
  • Mississippi River Commission low water inspection trip and public hearings canceled

    Due to the recent surge in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations across the region, the Mississippi River Commission has canceled its annual low water inspection trip and public hearings on board the MV Mississippi, scheduled for Aug. 23–27, 2021. The health and safety of our people and communities remains our priority.
  • USACE Vicksburg District announces new chief of Project Resources Management Branch

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District has selected Jason Mooney as Chief of Project Resources Management Branch (PRMB).
  • Mississippi River Commission cancels Upper Mississippi River portion of low water inspection trip but still plans to conduct Lower Mississippi River portion

    Due to the rising cases of COVID, the Mississippi River Commission (MRC) has canceled the Upper Mississippi River portion of its annual low water inspection trip on board the Motor Vessel MISSISSIPPI, which was scheduled for August 15-20, 2021. The health and safety for people is a priority during this critical time in our nation. The MRC still intends to conduct the Lower Mississippi River portion of the low water inspection trip and public hearings scheduled for August 22-27, 2021. Four public meetings have been scheduled aboard the Motor Vessel MISSISSIPPI in select towns along the river.
  • USACE Vicksburg District announces annual Physically Challenged Deer Hunt at Arkabutla Lake

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District announces that Arkabutla Lake will hold its annual Physically Challenged Deer Hunt this December. There will be two hunts, each lasting three days, on December 3 to 5 and December 10 to 12. Applications are available at the Arkabutla Lake Field Office. The deadline for receiving applications is November 5 at 3 p.m. Applicants will be notified on the second week of November if they have been selected for either hunt.
