For the city of Jackson, Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba signed the PPA, and Col. Christopher Klein, Vicksburg District Commander, signed for USACE. The signing ceremony was held at Jackson City Hall.

“We are committed to delivering vital solutions in collaboration with our partners,” said Col. Klein. “Through the Section 219 program, we are able to work together, with the City of Jackson, to provide water and wastewater infrastructure improvements to the community.”

Congress has authorized $125 million for improvements to the City of Jackson’s water system infrastructure. To date, the Vicksburg District has received $25 million, and the other $100 million is to be subsequently appropriated. The first increment of work will be the purchase of a 100 million gallon per day pump at the Savanna Street Wastewater Treatment Plant. Future projects will be determined by the City of Jackson subject to federal law and regulation.

The Section 219 Environmental Infrastructure program authorizes improvements to water and wastewater infrastructure. Assistance may be in the form of planning, design or construction for projects that are publicly owned. These projects are cost shared 75% federal and 25% non-federal.

The USACE Vicksburg District is engineering solutions to the nation’s toughest challenges. The Vicksburg District encompasses a 68,000-square-mile area across portions of Mississippi, Arkansas and Louisiana that holds nine major river basins and incorporates approximately 460 miles of mainline Mississippi River levees. The Vicksburg District is engaged in hundreds of projects and employs approximately 1,100 personnel.
