District provides update regarding Arkabutla Lake road, recreational site closures

Published Jan. 28, 2020
VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District notified the public of a road closure and recreational site closure at Arkabutla Lake, located approximately 35 miles north of Marks, Mississippi, Jan. 28.

Due to ongoing maintenance, the road across the top of Arkabutla Dam has been closed. The road will remain closed for approximately three weeks. Visitors should be prepared to use alternate routes.

The boat ramp at Hernando Point is reopened. The boat ramp was closed after a tornado hit the area Jan. 11. Hernando Point’s day-use area and campground remain closed. Restrooms are currently unavailable at Hernando Point.

Arkabutla, Enid, Sardis and Grenada lakes, the four Mississippi flood control reservoirs in the Vicksburg District’s area of responsibility, were authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1936, which provided a plan designed to address flooding that originated in the Yazoo Basin. The four reservoirs are used to hold runoff, or excess rainwater, as a flood-prevention measure. With approximately 3.2 million visitors each year, the north Mississippi lakes also contribute approximately $82 million into the local economy.
