2014 Winter Reforestation at Arkabutla Lake
We planted a total of 152 acres in three areas on Arkabutla. 4 acres at the entrance to Coldwater Point, 18 acres north of Hickahala Creek at the corner of Bethel Rd. and Poagville Rd., and 130 acres at the Horse Track just east of I55 at Coldwater, MS. Planting began on Jan. 23, 2014 with the assistance of Arkabutla personnel: John Wilburn, Robert Mcgee, David Funderburk, Rob Hoff, and Colby Pullen. A total of 46,000 trees were planted, mostly with machine. Around 1000 Cypress trees were planted by hand in the areas too wet to be planted with the tractor. Tree species planted include a mixture of 8 different oak species, persimmon, and cypress. Weather was a huge factor in this operation. Deeply frozen ground made it difficult and some days impossible to plant. Planting was finally concluded on Feb. 2, 2014 on a long, cold, rainy, miserable, day. The record low seedlings planted per day were 600 seedlings due to frozen ground. The record high day was 8,000 seedlings.
