Corps Awards Contract for Resurfacing of Levee Enlargement

Published June 12, 2017

VICKSBURG, Miss…The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District recently awarded Riley Bridge Co., Inc. of Russellville, Alabama, a $2,354,179 contract for work on a section of levee at Mississippi Highway 465. The work consists of replacing the gravel surface of the levee with an asphalt surface on the crown.

The project is approximately 4.7 miles in length, and is located about three miles north of Lake Albermarle. During the levee enlargement of East Bank Mississippi River Levees, Magna Vista – Brunswick, Item 468L, the asphalt surface on the crown of the levee had to be removed to complete the levee enlargement. The enlargement is now complete and a new asphalt surface will be applied.

The work is expected to begin early August if the river stages have dropped to a point that the levee board and/or Corps officials do not need access to the crown of the levee for flood fight purposes.

The Vicksburg District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers encompasses a 68,000-square-mile area across portions of Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana that holds seven major river basins and incorporates approximately 460 miles of mainline levees. The district is engaged in hundreds of projects and employs approximately 1,100 people. The Vicksburg District supports disaster response in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Tennessee.
