Vicksburg, Miss… The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District and the Vicksburg Chapter of the Society of American Military Engineers sponsored a math competition for 59 students from Porter's Chapel Academy, Scholastic Academy, St. Aloysius Catholic School, Warren Central Junior High, and Vicksburg Junior High.
In the January 29, 2015 competition, first place went to Victoria Gong from St. Aloysius. There was a tie for second place between R.G. Willis and Tuan Dang, both from Scholastic Academy. Third place went to Sean Slade from Scholastic Academy. The Team winner was St. Aloysius.
The competition is based on the national MATHCOUNTS format emphasizing problem-solving skills. It is designed to prepare students for the upcoming MATHCOUNTS regional competition. It recognizes students with mathematical minds and promotes the importance, challenges, and excitement found in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
