VICKSBURG, Miss…National Safe Boating Week is May 18-24 at all Corps lakes. This coincides with the National Safe Boating Week Campaign, a national observance initiated by the National Safe Boating Council. The web address for the “Wear It Campaign” is http://www.safeboatingcampaign.com.
Across the country, federal agencies with access to water will host events with an emphasis on safe boating and rescue techniques and teach visitors how to stay safe while recreating in or near water. Boaters can check with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for the latest nautical charts at www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov.
Lake personnel within the Vicksburg District will support this National Safe Boating Week campaign through efforts such as conducting water safety rescue bag demonstrations and water safety programs; water safety public service announcements broadcast in English and Spanish on radio stations and live radio interviews; park rangers will inspect and provide necessary maintenance to life jacket loaner stations, and facebook pages will be updated with daily reminders of water safety tips during National Safe Boating Week through Memorial Day weekend.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is the largest provider of water-based outdoor recreation in the nation and a leader in boat safety. The Corps urges recreational boaters to think “safety first” while enjoying water-based activities throughout the summer to lower risks of accidental deaths.
