Life Jackets are Mandatory at MS Lakes

The following life jacket rules are being enforced at all four of the Vicksburg District - North Mississippi lakes - Arkabutla, Sardis, Enid and Grenada:

  • All persons must wear a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket at all times while swimming outside of designated swimming areas
  • All persons must wear a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket at all times while skiing or being pulled by a vessel, regardless of vessel length
  • All persons must wear a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket on powered vessels 16 to 26 feet in length whenever under power by the main propulsion unit
  • All persons must wear a US Coast Guard-approved lief jacket at all times on powered vessels less than 16 feet in length or on non-powered vessels regardless of length

  • Vicksburg District provides update on forecasts, conditions across region - April 13

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District provided an update on forecasts and conditions across the district’s jurisdiction April 13. The National Weather Service has forecasted an average of 0.5-1.5 inches of rainfall over the Lower Mississippi River Valley over the next seven days. As of 2 p.m. April 13, the Mississippi River is 43.1 feet at Arkansas City, Arkansas; 54.2 feet at Greenville, Mississippi; and 50.3 feet at Vicksburg, Mississippi. The river is beginning to fall at each of these locations. Based on current forecasts, the Mississippi River at Natchez, Mississippi, is expected to crest at 57.4 feet April 13. These predictions are based on two days of forecasted rainfall and may change based on future rainfall.
  • Vicksburg District Employee Receives National Engineering Award

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – An employee with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District was recently named the 2020 “Levee Safety Professional of the Year” for USACE. Brad Arcement serves as a branch chief in the USACE Levee Safety Center and as a lead facilitator or co-facilitator on multiple large-scale levee projects. In his leadership role as the Vicksburg District’s risk-informed design coordinator, Arcement has helped engineers and technical experts across USACE scope risk assessments to support studies and implement risk-informed designs.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District provided an update on forecasts and conditions across the district’s jurisdiction April 9.
  • Vicksburg District to keep boat ramps, nature trails open at north Mississippi lakes, but other district recreation areas remain closed

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District will keep its boat ramps, nature trails and fishing areas at Arkabutla, Enid, Sardis and Grenada lakes open in north Mississippi for the time being.

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District provided an update on forecasts and conditions across the district’s jurisdiction March 31. The National Weather Service has forecasted an average of 0.5-1.5 inches of rainfall over the Lower Mississippi River Valley over the next seven days. The Mississippi River is expected to crest at Arkansas City, Arkansas, at 43 feet April 6; Greenville, Mississippi, at 54.5 feet April 7; Vicksburg, Mississippi, at 50 feet April 8; and Natchez, Mississippi, at 57 feet April 9. These predictions are based on two days of forecasted rainfall and may change based on future rainfall. Based on seven days of forecasted rainfall, the Yazoo Backwater Area is expected to crest at 96-96.5 feet in the coming weeks.

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District closed the gates of the Steele Bayou Control Structure, located approximately 10 miles north of Vicksburg, Mississippi, and provided an update on forecasts and conditions across the district’s jurisdiction March 30.
  • Vicksburg District provides update on forecasts, conditions across region – March 27

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District provided an update on forecasts and conditions across the district’s jurisdiction March 27. The National Weather Service has forecasted an average of one-to-four inches of rainfall over the Lower Mississippi River Valley over the next seven days. The Mississippi River is expected to crest at Arkansas City, Arkansas, at 40 feet April 5; Greenville, Mississippi, at 51.5 feet April 6; Vicksburg, Mississippi, at 48 feet April 7; and Natchez, Mississippi, at 55 feet April 8. These predictions are based on two days of forecasted rainfall and may change based on future rainfall.

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District provided an update on forecasts, conditions and flood fight operations across the district’s jurisdiction March 24.
  • UPDATE: Vicksburg District to temporarily close visitor centers, field offices, recreation areas to the public

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District will temporarily close its visitor centers, interpretive centers, field offices and select recreation site attractions across Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas to the public beginning March 19.
  • Vicksburg District to temporarily close Jesse Brent Lower Mississippi River Museum

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District will temporarily close the Jesse Brent Lower Mississippi River Museum in downtown Vicksburg, Mississippi, beginning March 17 at 4 p.m. CDT. The museum’s closure is due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) concern and recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and USACE guidance to avoid large gatherings of people. As of 8 a.m. CDT March 17, 12 COVID-19 cases have been diagnosed in Mississippi.
