Grenada Lake Hosting Fish Habitat Day

VICKSBURG, Miss…The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Grenada Lake is hosting its Fish Habitat Day February 21, 2015. Volunteers are asked to meet at the Bryant Boat Ramp at 8:00 a.m. for a light breakfast.

Keith Meals, a biologist with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, will instruct volunteers on the proper construction and placement of fish habitat. The new fish habitats will be constructed of stake beds that the fish will use as cover.

Replacing the cover and bedding areas are important in maintaining healthy fish populations. This event also gives fishermen an opportunity to become familiar with the locations of these structures around the lake. Many fishermen will use their GPS to mark the stake beds and return when they are inundated.

Volunteers are asked to bring ATVs, helmets (required), post drivers or hammers, and gloves. Volunteers using ATVs must obey Grenada Lake’s helmet policy. Volunteers are asked to dress appropriately for the weather. Lunch will be provided.

Although the primary mission of Grenada Lake is flood damage risk reduction, almost 200 million individuals visit Grenada Lake annually to enjoy the campgrounds, playgrounds, fishing areas and swimming beaches. The lake traffic brings approximately $50,000,000 annually to the local economy and supports 750 jobs.
