Louisiana Field Office to Extend Visitor’s Centers’ Times

The district is engaged in hundreds of projects and supports disaster response in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Tennessee.

Vicksburg, Miss………The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) Vicksburg District’s Grand Ecore Visitor’s Center and the J. Bennett Johnston Waterway Regional Visitor’s Center will have extended operating times for the summer of 2014. Both will be open to the public seven days a week on Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. and 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Additional summer staffing at the Louisiana Field Office visitor’s centers will enable these summer hours to be in effect until September 15, 2014. New dates and times will be posted at that time.

The Grand Ecore Visitor’s Center is located in Natchitoches, Louisiana, at 106 Tauzin Island Road. While offering extraordinary views of the Red River, the grounds are host to wildlife, cultural and historical displays of the area and provide waterway and navigation information. A walking trail is available for visitors to get a first-hand look at Civil War entrenchments.

The J. Bennett Johnston Waterway Regional Visitor’s Center is located at 700 Clyde Fant Parkway in Shreveport, Louisiana. It provides the opportunity to learn about the Red River, past and present, and of how the Corps worked to tame the mighty Red for navigation and recreation. It offers 8,300 square feet of reception area, theater, and exhibition hall with audiovisual, static, and interactive exhibits. Tours are available to the public.

The Vicksburg District manages thousands of acres that offer recreational opportunities that include fishing, boating, camping, hiking, bicycling, swimming, and photography. The Louisiana Field Office of the Corps encompasses over 200 miles along the Ouachita River from Camden, Arkansas, to Jonesville, Louisiana, containing 24 parks and boat ramps. Bayou Bodcau Dam, Wallace Lake, Caddo Lake, 10 Recreation Areas on the Red River, Grand Ecore Visitor Center, and J Bennett Johnston Waterways Regional Visitor Center.
