Sardis Lake Fish Habitat Day

Vicksburg, Miss….The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District will host its annual Sardis Lake fish habitat day on Saturday, February 15, and is asking for volunteer assistance to create new fish habitat with stake beds and donated Christmas trees.

Many fishermen know that one of the keys to a good fishing spot is good habitat. As reservoirs age, flooded timber and brush rot away leaving minnows and fish fry with less protective cover. Replacing this cover is important to maintaining healthy fish populations. This event also gives fishermen an opportunity to become familiar with the locations of these structures around the lake.

Volunteers are asked to report to the Sardis Lake Field Office located 29049 Highway 315, Sardis, Mississippi, at the north end of Sardis Dam for registration from 7:00 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. They are encouraged to wear outdoor work clothing, gloves, and protective eye wear. Use of personal ATV’s is allowed, and riders are reminded to wear helmets.

Although the primary mission of Sardis Lake is flood damage risk reduction, over 1.4 million individuals visit the 98,000-acre recreational area annually to enjoy the camping, playgrounds, swimming areas, several types of trails, fishing, boat ramps and marinas. The lake traffic brings approximately $34.5 million to the local economy and supports approximately 500 jobs.
