Vicksburg District To Host Physically Challenged Deer Hunt

The district is engaged in hundreds of projects and supports disaster response in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Tennessee.

Vicksburg, Miss…..The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisiana Field Office will host its ninth annual physically challenged deer hunt at the Columbia Lock and Dam. The hunt will be held Saturday 18 January 2014. Eight disabled hunters were randomly selected to hunt on approximately 400 acres adjacent to the lock and dam area located at 580 Lock Office Road, Columbia, Louisiana.

This special deer hunt is designed to provide an outdoor recreational opportunity to individuals that have a permanent physical condition that severely impairs their mobility. The hunters will use primitive firearms as defined as legal by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and be taken to plywood box stands by four-wheeled all terrain vehicles. Local citizens and businesses will donate time and food for the event with the Caldwell Parish Sheriff’s office supplying lunch on Saturday.

Schedule of Events: 
Friday 3:00 p.m.- Sight-in practice at West Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s range (only if needed)
Saturday 4:30 a.m. - 5:00 a.m. – Participants arrive at Columbia Lock and Dam Office
Saturday 5:00 a.m. - 5:30 a.m. – Welcome and Safety Briefing
Saturday 5:30 a.m. - 6:15 a.m. – Hunters will be transported by rangers and volunteers to deer stands
Saturday 11:30 a.m. - Hunters return to lock and dam office for lunch
Saturday 2:00 p.m. - Hunters return to stands for afternoon hunt
Saturday 6:00 p.m. (dusk) - Hunters return to lock and dam office

The Vicksburg District manages thousands of acres that offer an array of recreational opportunities to include fishing, boating, camping, hiking, bicycling, swimming, and photography. The Louisiana Field Office of the Corps encompasses over 200 miles along the Ouachita River from Camden, Arkansas, to Jonesville, Louisiana, containing 24 parks and boat ramps.
