Vicksburg, Miss… The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District (Corps) will host the 19th annual Arkabutla Lake youth raccoon hunt. These hunts will take place on 31 January, 1 February, 7 and 8 February and 14 and 15 February. All applications to participate must be received at the Arkabutla Lake Field Office by 4:30 p. m on Thursday, 16 January 2014.

These hunts began in 1994 to assist with raccoon population in the  Arkabutla Lake area and are administered by the Corps and the Arkabutla Raccoon Hunting Association.  Only two hunting parties will hunt per night with hunters accompanied by sanctioned officials. These hunts assist Corps natural resource specialists and the Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks (MDWFP) in sustaining a viable wildlife population. Additionally, they provide young sportsmen firearm safety training and respect for wildlife management practices.

Firearms will be provided by the Arkabutla Raccoon Hunters Association but hunting groups are strongly encouraged to wear proper attire and bring their own flashlight/spotlight. All state and federal hunting regulations will be enforced.

For an application or more information on the hunt, please contact Coleman Pullen at the Arkabutla Lake Field Office at 662-562-6261. To learn more about the many recreational opportunities offered, visit the Vicksburg District’s Facebook page. http://www.facebook.com/VicksburgUSACE
