Vicksburg, Miss……The Corps of Engineers Federal Employees Compensation Act (FECA) Fraud Investigation Unit (FIU) has gotten off to a great start in fiscal year 2014 by saving taxpayers over $3.9 million dollars in workers’ compensation costs. The savings, realized the first month of the new fiscal year, were the result of investigative efforts that uncovered several inaccurate or false claims.

Last year, the FECA FIU saved the taxpayers in excess of $3.8 million by returning rehabilitated individuals to the workforce and denying fraudulent claims, and in 2012, the FIU saved over $5.5 million using the same techniques.

The FIU is a unique group of individuals who investigate fraud, waste and abuse of Workers’ Compensation (FECA) funds for the Corps. This unit has been stationed at the Vicksburg District since 1992 and supports the Corps nationwide. The unit’s mission is to assist the Corps in management of injury claims submitted by the Corps’ 30,000 plus civilian employees. Injury claims result in workers’ compensation costs of more than $20 million annually.

Since the beginning of the program, the FECA FIU has saved taxpayers over $75 million dollars by preventing and reducing costs related to fraud, waste, and abuse of the FECA program. This money would have otherwise been diverted from construction and management of infrastructure and vital waterways.
