Corps to Co-Sponsor Ouachita River Water Sweep

The Vicksburg District encompasses a 68,000-square-mile area across portions of Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana that holds seven major river basins and incorporates approximately 460 miles of mainline levees. Vicksburg, Mississippi…..The Vicksburg District’s Louisiana Field Office (LFO) of the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Keep Monroe Beautiful, Keep West Monroe Beautiful, and Keep Ouachita Parish Beautiful organizations will sponsor the 2013 annual Ouachita River Water Sweep. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, 21 September, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at locations in Monroe, West Monroe, and Sterlington.

Volunteers can meet at Forsythe Park, Lazarre Park, Moon Lake, or Sterlington landings where they will register and receive t-shirts and cleaning supplies.

The event was originated in 2006 to provide enjoyable and safe areas along the Ouachita River for many types of outdoor recreation. During this year’s event, volunteers and organizations will concentrate on cleaning along the shorelines and within the Ouachita River.

The Vicksburg District’s LFO provides day-use activities and camping at two river systems and three lakes and encompasses the Ouachita-Black River, Red River, Bayou Bodcau, Caddo Lake, Wallace Lake, Grand Ecore Visitor Center, and the J Bennett Johnston Waterway Regional Visitor Center. The annual attendance at these areas has totaled over 1.3 million visitors.
