Mississippi River Commission Discusses Claiborne County Port

The Vicksburg District encompasses a 68,000-square-mile area across portions of Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana that holds seven major river basins and incorporates approximately 460 miles of mainline levees. VICKSBURG, Miss.-The Mississippi River Commission (MRC) conducted the annual high-water inspection trip on the Mississippi River in Natchez. The meeting was aboard the Motor Vessel MISSISSIPPI where MRC commission members met with city, county and state officials to discuss issues about MRC projects on the Mississippi River and its tributaries and to exchange viewpoints and ideas between the public and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps).

 

Claiborne County officials were present to discuss their views and suggestions on matters affecting the water resources infrastructure in Claiborne County and the Claiborne County Port. These discussions included flood control, environmental issues, recreation and navigation on the Mississippi River and Tributaries.  Brenda Buck, County Administrator, Milton Chambliss, Executive Director of the Economic Development District, Gloria Dotson, Claiborne County Chancery Clerk and Albert Garner, Chairman of the Claiborne County Port Commission spoke with Corps officials about the Claiborne County Port.

 

The MRC was established in 1879 and is composed of seven members nominated by the President of the United States and confirmed by the Senate. Three of the organization's members are officers of the Corps of Engineers; one member is from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; and three members are civilians. The general responsibilities of the commission is to recommend policies and work programs, the study of  necessity modifications or additions to the flood control and navigation projects and the recommendation of any matters authorized by law. The responsibilities of the MRC include the entire length of the Mississippi River from its headwaters at Lake Itasca, Minnesota to Head of Passes, Louisiana where the Mississippi River empties into the Gulf of Mexico.

 

The Mississippi River Commission brings critical engineering representation to the drainage basin, which impacts 41% of the United States and includes 1.25 million square miles, over 250 tributaries, 31 states, and 2 Canadian provinces.
