Corps’ Vidalia Area Office Contract Administration Expert Retires

The Vicksburg District encompasses a 68,000-square-mile area across portions of Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana that holds seven major river basins and incorporates approximately 460 miles of mainline levees. Vicksburg, Miss…The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District area engineer for the Vidalia Area Office recently retired.  For 33 years, Richard A. Jones served the Corps with distinction and honor and is considered a subject matter expert in construction contract administration. 

Jones was involved in all aspects of construction contract administration for projects within the Vidalia Area Office.  Major projects include Red River Waterway project; Ouachita–Black Basin project; Mississippi River Stone Dike and Revetment construction; Mississippi River Levee Project; and construction of laboratory facilities and other projects at the Engineer Research and Development Center. 

He began his career with the Corps at the Vicksburg District’s Shreveport Area Office on October 11, 1983 as a civil engineer. He worked his way through the ranks and was promoted to supervisory civil engineer on September 22, 2013. 

Because of his professional work ethic, dedication, and technical knowledge, he was recognized with Vicksburg District’s Construction Management Excellence Award in 1999, 2004, and 2015.  

During his career, Jones has participated in and/or directed numerous emergency response missions including multiple Mississippi River and Red River Floods, most notably the historical 2011 MS River Flood and the 2015 Red River Flood. 

A resident of Benton, Louisiana, he earned his Bachelors’ degrees in computer science from Louisiana State University and civil engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla. He earned his Master’s Degree in engineering management from the University of Missouri-Rolla.

He is married to Paula Jones, and they have five adult children and several grandchildren.  During retirement he plans to enjoy time with his family and hunt.
