  • Vicksburg District to keep boat ramps, nature trails open at Mississippi lakes and provides new boating requirements

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District will keep its boat ramps, nature trails and fishing areas at Arkabutla, Enid, Sardis and Grenada lakes open in north Mississippi. Arkabutla, Sardis, Grenada and Enid lakes are not included in the recreation areas that will be reopened through the governor’s April 17 order, which has allowed select state beaches, parks, reservoirs and other areas to reopen on a limited basis. The Vicksburg District’s visitor centers, interpretive centers, museums, field offices and select recreation site attractions, including campgrounds and beaches, across Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas have been closed to the public since March 20. These areas will remain closed until further notice.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District opened the Steele Bayou Control Structure, located approximately 10 miles north of Vicksburg, Mississippi, April 20.

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District notified local authorities and emergency management personnel April 20 that flows from Grenada Lake, located near Interstate 55 in north Mississippi, are forecasted to enter the project’s spillway within the week.

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District has temporarily closed select boat ramps and restrooms at Arkabutla, Sardis and Grenada lakes in north Mississippi due to high water and power outages.

  • Vicksburg District to prepare supplemental environmental impact statement for Yazoo Backwater Pumps Project

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District announced April 16 that it will prepare a supplemental environmental impact statement (SEIS) for the Yazoo Area Pump Project in the Yazoo Backwater Area in Mississippi. The public is invited to read the notice of intent for the SEIS, which is published in the Federal Register at the following link: https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2020/04/16/2020-07966/notice-of-intent-to-prepare-supplemental-environmental-impact-statement-for-the-yazoo-area-pump and to provide comments in accordance with guidance in the notice.  

  • Vicksburg District provides update on forecasts, conditions across region - April 13

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District provided an update on forecasts and conditions across the district’s jurisdiction April 13. The National Weather Service has forecasted an average of 0.5-1.5 inches of rainfall over the Lower Mississippi River Valley over the next seven days. As of 2 p.m. April 13, the Mississippi River is 43.1 feet at Arkansas City, Arkansas; 54.2 feet at Greenville, Mississippi; and 50.3 feet at Vicksburg, Mississippi. The river is beginning to fall at each of these locations. Based on current forecasts, the Mississippi River at Natchez, Mississippi, is expected to crest at 57.4 feet April 13. These predictions are based on two days of forecasted rainfall and may change based on future rainfall.

  • Vicksburg District Employee Receives National Engineering Award

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – An employee with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District was recently named the 2020 “Levee Safety Professional of the Year” for USACE. Brad Arcement serves as a branch chief in the USACE Levee Safety Center and as a lead facilitator or co-facilitator on multiple large-scale levee projects. In his leadership role as the Vicksburg District’s risk-informed design coordinator, Arcement has helped engineers and technical experts across USACE scope risk assessments to support studies and implement risk-informed designs.
