  • Mississippi River Commission schedules low-water inspection trip

    The Mississippi River Commission will conduct its annual low-water inspection trip on the Mississippi River, Aug. 19-23, 2019.
  • Vicksburg District urges recreation site visitors to ‘play it safe’ during Fourth of July weekend

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District reminds recreation site visitors across Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas to practice safety during the Fourth of July holiday weekend. Recreation sites across the region will host special events during the holiday weekend. In Arkansas, Lake Ouachita will hold fireworks shows July 4 and 6, DeGray Lake July 4 and Lake Greeson July 6. In Mississippi, Sardis Lake will hold a fireworks show July 4.
  • Vicksburg District opens Little Sunflower Control Structure, Muddy Bayou Control Structure Gates

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District opened the gates of the Little Sunflower Control Structure June 22 and the gates of the Muddy Bayou Control Structure June 24. The Little Sunflower Control Structure, which was built in 1977, combined with the Mississippi River, Yazoo Backwater levees and Steele Bayou Control Structure, prevents the Yazoo and Mississippi rivers from backing up and further flooding the Delta. The structure’s gates have been closed since May 4 preventing backflow.
  • Vicksburg District announces Change of Command Ceremony

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – Col. Michael C. Derosier will transfer command of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District to Col. Robert A. Hilliard in a formal change of command ceremony at the Vicksburg District’s headquarters building June 26 at 10 a.m. Central. Maj. Gen. Richard G. Kaiser, USACE Mississippi Valley Division (MVD) commander and president of the Mississippi River Commission (MRC), will officiate the ceremony.
  • Vicksburg District opens Steele Bayou Control Structure gates, anticipates the opening of the Little Sunflower Control Structure

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District opened the gates of the Steele Bayou Control Structure June 20 at 9 a.m. The Steele Bayou Control Structure, which was built in 1969, combined with the Mississippi River and Yazoo Backwater levees, prevents the Yazoo and Mississippi rivers from backing up and further flooding the Delta. The structure’s gates have been closed since June 7 preventing backflow.
  • Vicksburg District Closes Steele Bayou Control Structure

    Vicksburg, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District closed the gates of the Steele Bayou Control Structure June 7 to prevent backflow into the south Delta. Heavy rainfall across the region during the past two weeks has elevated the Mississippi River and its tributaries. Because the river side of the Steele Bayou Control Structure has risen above the interior elevation of the Yazoo Backwater area, the Yazoo Backwater is unable to drain, and thus, the gates of the Steele Bayou Control Structure must be closed to prevent the Yazoo and Mississippi Rivers from further flooding the Delta.
