  • Sardis Lake Hosts Fourth Annual Wounded Veterans Fishing Event

    Vicksburg, Miss….The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Sardis Lake Field Office partnered with the Panola County sheriff’s office and local volunteers to host the fourth annual fishing event for wounded veterans. The six participating wounded veterans were treated to dinner by Slick McDonald on July 20, the evening prior to the beginning of the fishing event. On July 21, their day began with a breakfast provided by Jason Chrestman, Lonnie Chrestman and Howard Brower. Following breakfast at 7 a.m., the veterans teamed with volunteer guides Jeremy Aldridge, Stephan Sullivan and Chaney Starnes to begin fishing at Pats Bluff Campground on the scenic waters of Sardis Lake.
  • Corps’ Vicksburg District Conducts Columbia Lock and Dam Readiness Exercise

    Vicksburg, Miss…The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Vicksburg District conducted a readiness exercise on July 25 at the Ouachita Parish Emergency Operations Center in Monroe, Louisiana. The exercise covered three scenarios concerning the Columbia Lock and Dam river levels. Customers, partners and stakeholders from industry and local government participated in the exercise and discussed preparedness and responsiveness.
  • Deputy Commander for Corps’ Vicksburg District Retires

    Vicksburg, Miss. – The deputy commander for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District, Lt. Col. Aaron W. Wolf, is retiring from his military career. A native of Poynette, Wisconsin, Lt. Col. Wolf was commissioned into the Corps of Engineers in September 1994, out of the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point. He has served as the deputy district commander and engineer with the Corps of Engineers’ St. Louis and Vicksburg districts. He also served as the Division Engineer for the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) leading engineer efforts during operations in Iraq in 2016. Wolf has deployed five times and earned seven combat overseas bars with missions in support of Afghanistan, Iraq, and Kosovo.
  • Arkabutla Lake Hosts Annual Archery Hunt

    VICKSBURG, MISS… Arkabutla Lake will host its 19th annual special management archery deer hunt October 19-22 and 26-29. There will be four hunts, each lasting two days; October 19-20; October 21-22; October 26-27; and October 28-29. The hunt will be held in the natural area below the Arkabutla Dam, an area that is usually closed to hunting. Applications are available at the Arkabutla Lake Field Office. The deadline for receiving applications is 3 p.m., August 29. Applicants must possess a valid Mississippi hunting license and be at least 16 years of age.
  • Corps’ Vicksburg District Halts Locking at Columbia Lock and Dam

    Vicksburg, Miss…The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Vicksburg District announces that Columbia Lock and Dam has been closed to navigation until emergency repairs can be made. In addition, the water levels within the pool has been lowered 3 feet to relieve some of the pressures on the lock structure. At this time, the structure is stable and further damages are not expected.
  • Corps’ Vicksburg District Begins Lowering Water Level on Ouachita River

    Vicksburg, Miss…The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Vicksburg District began lowering the water level on the Ouachita River on July 5 to inspect the Columbia Lock and Dam. In an effort to ensure public safety, the Corps evaluated water depths at the seven boat ramps based on a 3’ fall. As a result, the seven boat ramps operated by the Corps within the Columbia Pool (Riverton, Prairion, Bawcomville, Moon Lake, Sterlington, Finch Bayou and Felsenthal South) will be closed at 12:00 on July 9. The Riverton swim beach will be closed at 12:00 on July 10. The areas will be closed to protect your safety and prevent possible damages to your boats. Please do not move or go-around any of the barricades.
  • Corps’ Vicksburg District Inspects Columbia Lock and Dam

    Vicksburg, Miss… The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District is currently inspecting the Columbia Lock and Dam located on the Ouachita River approximately seven miles upstream of Columbia, Louisiana. USACE is inspecting the lock and dam for deficiencies after identifying seepage and sand boils near the structure and voids under the lock wall in early July. The inspection will be used to inform ongoing remediation work focused on repairing the structure and minimizing future risks.
  • Vicksburg District’s Chief of Design Branch Receives Commander’s Award For Outstanding Achievement in EEO

    VICKSBURG, MISS…The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District announces that David L. Wallace, recently received the Commander’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO). Wallace received this award for his significant contributions to the EEO Program to assure full opportunity in employment for all persons regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, and physical or mental handicap.
