  • Grenada Lake Annual Drawdown Accelerated This Year

    Vicksburg, Miss – The Vicksburg District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) will accelerate the annual drawdown of Grenada Lake by one month in order to perform dam maintenance. The Corps has increased the amount of water released through the dam within seasonal release requirements in an effort to reach the flood control pool level of 193 feet by 1 November.
  • Corps Regulatory Branch Promotes Mallard

    Vicksburg, Miss… The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District (Corps) recently selected Jennifer Fryar Mallard as chief of the permit section in the regulatory branch. Mallard will serve as chief of the permit section responsible for review, analysis, approval, disapproval, evaluation, and inspection of certain Corps projects and all applications for Department of the Army permits covered by general permits, and nationwide permits. She will also have oversight of the compliance program which reviews, analyzes, and evaluates public notices and permit documents issued by local, state and other federal agencies. She will use her thorough knowledge and understanding of regulatory methods, techniques and practices of the principles of biology, botany, soils, chemistry, geology and forestry.

    Vicksburg, Miss…Phillip C. Rogers, a civil engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District’s (Corps) Engineering Division, recently received a Commander’s Special Emphasis Award at the District’s ninth annual Founder’s Day ceremony.
  • Labor Day Weekend Water Safety Tips

    Arkabutla Lake, Miss … The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) at Arkabutla Lake is preparing for the 2013 Labor Day Weekend. The lake staff would like to remind you of some water safety tips at the close of the summer. Knowing some of the facts about drowning may help save your life or the life of someone you love. According to Corps statistics, the majority of people (89 percent) who drown are male, 39 percent are 18-35 years old, 24 percent are 36-53 years old and 89 percent of the people who die in water-related accidents were not wearing a life jacket. More than 90 percent of the people who die in boating-related accidents had not taken a boating safety course.
  • 4th Annual Sardis Lake Dove Hunt

    Sardis Lake…… The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) at Sardis Lake is hosting its 4th annual public dove hunt on September 7. The hunt is free of charge and open to the general public. The Corps has prepared two fields that are located in Lafayette County on County Road 182 off of Hwy. 314, which is approximately 8 miles from Oxford. They will be open for hunting the remainder of the season after the September 7 event.
  • National Bilingual Team Spreading Water Safety Message at Aqua Fest

    Vicksburg, Miss … The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers National Bilingual Water Safety Team will be enhancing water safety messages during Aqua Fest this weekend at Lake Greeson and DeGray Lake for both English and Spanish speaking visitors.
  • Arkabutla Lake Seasonal Recreation Area Closures

    Vicksburg, Mississippi….The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) Vicksburg District will close several recreation areas at Arkabutla Lake, Mississippi, for the season after the Labor Day Holiday. Additional closures will be announced in the fall.
  • U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District Celebrates 140 Years of Service

    Vicksburg, Miss…The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District celebrated its ninth annual Founder’s Day today in observance of the District’s 140th year of service to our Nation. The day began with a continental breakfast for retirees. The breakfast was immediately followed by the Founder’s Day ceremony where District Commander, Col. John W. Cross, made opening remarks by stating, “Welcome to all of you, especially to our retirees. You are all directly responsible for the current, impressive reputation this District has throughout the community and throughout the Corps. Thank you for all you have done in the past. The contributions of our employees continue to be outstanding.”
  • Corps’ Mat Sinking Season Begins

    Vicksburg, Miss… The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) Vicksburg District’s Mat Sinking Unit (MSU) is scheduled to begin laying articulated concrete mats on the banks of the Mississippi River on August 26. The vessels of the MSU will depart the Vicksburg Harbor, Friday, 23 August 2013, and assemble around noon below the I-20 bridge before proceeding to their first worksite.
  • Mississippi River Commission Schedules Low-Water Inspection Trip

    Vicksburg, Miss…….The Mississippi River Commission will conduct its annual low-water inspection trip of the lower Mississippi River basin beginning 20 August and ending on 23 August 2013. Three public meetings have been scheduled in selected towns along the river. These public meeting with be held aboard the Motor Vessel MISSISSIPPI.
