VICKSBURG, MISS… Due to a broken depth marker in the swimming area at Riverton Recreation Area (RRA), the US Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) has temporarily closed the swimming area effective immediately. The depth marker has broken/jagged metal that would be dangerous if area remained opened to the public.

“We realize the inconvenience of closing Riverton Recreation Swimming Area, but nothing is more important to us than public safety. We have purchased materials and will make the repairs as quickly as possible”, said Colonel John Cross, commander of the Vicksburg District.

The boat ramp, playground area, pavilions, and comfort station remain open to the public.

The Vicksburg District’s Louisiana Field Office provides day-use activities and camping at two river systems and three lakes and encompasses the Ouachita-Black River, Red River, Bayou Bodcau, Caddo Lake, Wallace Lake, Grand Ecore Visitor Center, and the J. Bennett Johnston Waterway Regional Visitor Center. The annual attendance at these areas totals over 1.3 million visitors, supports approximately 200 jobs, and adds approximately $13 million into the local economy.
