Vicksburg District to Host Local Math Competition

The Vicksburg District encompasses a 68,000-square-mile area across portions of Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana that holds seven major river basins and incorporates approximately 460 miles of mainline levees. The district is engaged in hundreds of projects and supports disaster response in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Tennessee.

Vicksburg, Miss…The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District and the Vicksburg Chapter of the Society of American Military Engineers are sponsoring a math competition for local students. The competition will be held 22 January 2014 at District Headquarters, 4155 Clay Street, Vicksburg, Mississippi.

The math competition is for sixth, seventh and eighth graders. This year there will be 55 students from Porters Chapel Academy, St. Francis, St. Aloysius, Vicksburg Junior High, Warren Central Junior High, and home-schooled students participating in the event.

The competition is based on the national MATHCOUNTS format emphasizing problem solving skills designed to prepare students for the upcoming MATHCOUNTS regional competition. It recognizes students with mathematical minds and promotes the importance, challenges, and excitement found in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Vicksburg District team members serve as mentors, tutors and proctors during state testing. They also serve as science fair judges and regularly speak to students on various topics such as engineering, math, science, and technology. Vicksburg District sponsors the Mississippi River Class at Vicksburg and Warren Central High Schools and has adopted Vicksburg High School since 1998 and Sherman Avenue Elementary since 2008. District has partnered with the Vicksburg Warren School District for the past 23 years.
