Cold Weather Tips from Sardis Lake
Nov 28 2011
The cold weather of late fall and winter is here. During this time of year, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Sardis Lake would like to remind visitors, hunters especially, to be mindful of weather conditions when planning a visit to the lake. Hypothermia, a condition in which the body loses heat faster than it can produce it, is a major concern this time of year. Keeping in mind the following bits of information may prevent your visit to the lake from ending in tragedy.
1. Monitor weather forecasts
2. Always let someone know where you will be and when you expect to return.
3. Dress appropriately for the weather. Bringing extra dry clothes to change into is also a good idea.
4. Boaters must wear lifejackets- At Sardis Lake it’s not only the rule, it’s a good idea. Lifejackets will increase your chance of survival if you enter the water.
5. If you do enter the water, use the H.E.L.P. (Heat Escape Lessening Posture) and huddle positions that can conserve heat loss. Movement such as swimming can actually cause the body to cool down faster.
6. Learn the signs of hypothermia and how to treat it.
7. Take a cell phone or some form of communication with you.
8. Try to stay dry- This goes not only for boaters, but also for visitors on land exposed to precipitation. Cold water conducts heat away from the body 25-30 times faster than air at the same temperature.
9. Know where you’re going. Getting lost increases your exposure to cold weather.
